The Highlandtown Main Street program has helped merchants and building owners improve their facades. It’s easy to apply! Receive up to one free dollar for every dollar you spend on the project.
Suggested work includes:
- Awnings
- New signs
- Blade (hanging) signs
- Cornice restoration
- Window restoration
- Painting
How to Apply
Contact Highlandtown Main Street! You must apply for a façade grant before beginning any work in order to be eligible for reimbursement.
To apply please submit the following to the Main Street Manager:
- Two cost estimates on contractor’s letterhead.
- A short application form
- Detailed renderings, drawings, or sample pictures of all proposed work (paint colors, window types, etc.) Not sure how to improve your façade? Our Design Team is happy to help!
Eligibility
Grants are available for exterior work on buildings located within the Highlandtown Main Street district, which is roughly Eastern Avenue between Ellwood and Haven, plus one block north and south (to Fleet and Bank) and the 200 – 600 blocks of S. Conkling. If you aren’t sure if your building is included, please call for details.
Approval and Reimbursement
All applications for façade grants must be approved by Highlandtown Main Street’s Design Committee and the Maryland Historical Trust. Designs must enhance the appearance of Highlandtown Main Street while respecting the historic integrity of the buildings. Before you plan your project, please look at the design guidelines created by the Design Committee. If you still have questions, contact the Main Street Manager.
If you want to receive a grant for your façade improvements, you may not begin work until you have received an approval letter from Highlandtown Main Street.
If your project is approved, you must complete the work and submit bills from contractors and copies of checks in order to be eligible for reimbursement. You will then receive a reimbursement check.
