Small Business Saturday 2016

sbs-2015-2-sqWith multiple spots to purchase fine arts, locally made goods, vintage items and more, the area surrounding Eastern Avenue and Conkling Street has been a known shopping destination for several years now.

The Small Business Saturday Breakfast, scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 26, from 8 a.m. to noon at Hoehn’s Bakery (400 S. Conkling St.) makes it even easier and more fun to get holiday shopping done early.

Hoehn’s offers a home base where shoppers can fuel up on free pastries and coffee and pick up a shopping bag and shopping guides before heading out to Highlandtown’s merchants, which run a spectacularly wide gamut, from Y:ART Gallery & Fine Gifts (3402 Gough St) to Value Village Thrift Store (3424 Eastern Ave).

The shopping is only half of the equation in Highlandtown, where business owners are just as happy to have a conversation.

sbs-2015-4-sqFelicia Zannino-Baker, owner of the Highlandtown Gallery (248 S. Conkling St.) is always around to greet customers warmly and help them find the perfect artful gift, whether it’s at her shop or elsewhere. Kevin Bernhard, owner of Rust-N-Shine, (3522 Bank St.), knows all about vintage Baltimore, from fox stoles to highball glasses.

“It’s not just about shopping; it’s about creating a community,” said Amanda Smit-Peters, Highlandtown Main Street manager. “That’s how you get repeat customers in a business district.”
