First Friday Art Walk: Aug 2 (LITERARY NIGHT!)

Join Yellow Arrow Publishing, Highlandtown Arts & Entertainment District & Highlandtown Main Street in celebrating local writers at the first ever LITERARY NIGHT during the Highlandtown First Friday Art Walk!

Participate in hands-on writing activities and a scavenger hunt, and meet dozens of local authors, writers, and small presses spread throughout Highlandtown’s participating galleries, shops, and eateries!

LITERARY FEATURE: JESSICA GREGG, VICTORIA KENNEDY AND LINES + STARS
Jessica Gregg, editor of Baltimore Style, invites art walk participants to pitch or bring her essays, as well as poetry, which will run online at BaltimoreStyle.com or possibly in the magazine itself. The Lines + Stars/L+S Press table will present an “exquisite corpse” poem to which visitors will add throughout the day. Participants will receive the full poem via email after the First Friday festivities conclude.

Join poet Ann Quinn at Highlandtown Gallery to help create an Ode to Highlandtown. We will use images from the gallery and from your own memories and impressions of the ‘hood to create a poem of praise to our own creative, diverse, historical, living, vibrant neighborhood. The finished poem will be posted on YellowArrowPublishing.com and shared with the world!

Solo exhibition by Ryan Syrell
Night equalizes, it de-centers, and affirms that we are unstable and floating; unmoored from constructed time. It encourages wild oscillations between anxiety and ecstasy. A sense of porosity is amplified as sensation, perception, and memory wash together in nocturnal space.
The paintings in Book of Flowers are a suite of nocturnes; they begin at the moment of sunset and progress into night. This exhibition continues Syrell’s investigations into the affect of color and collapse of space as memory. Employing strategies of overwhelming scale and saturated palettes, each paintings’ intensity and restlessness become their own act within a play, scene within a film, or song on a record.
Night becomes the central subject of the work, directing the psyche of its inhabitants and its observers. Depicted are lived-in rooms, interiors full of material life both ephemeral and urgent. Screens access virtual spaces and windows offer portals to elsewhere while reflecting immediate surroundings. Cut flowers and vestiges of limbs haunt, while each element doubles as a barrier and an opening.

Highlandtown Art Walk Writer-in-Residence
The writer-in-residence for July, August & September 2019 is Jessica Gregg.
Jessica Gregg is the editor of Baltimore Style magazine and also oversees Baltimore’s Child and Washington Family magazines. She is a Baltimore booster, proud rowhouse dweller, the mother of two teenagers, and an avid poetry reader. Her poetry collection “News from this Lonesome City” will be published this year by Finishing Line Press.
